While politicians debate climate change and its long-term impact, one thing is clear in the short term — New Jersey is currently one of the safest places to live in America when it comes to extreme weather.

According to a new nationwide study based on data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), New Jersey reported just 0.42 weather-related deaths or injuries per million residents in 2024 — a significant improvement from 22 total incidents in 2023.

That figure places New Jersey third among all 50 states. Only Maine and Rhode Island ranked safer, each reporting zero weather-related injuries or fatalities last year.

A Steady Pattern of Weather Safety

The research highlights a positive trend for the Garden State. Over the past five years (2020–2024), New Jersey has seen a steady decline in weather-related incidents, showing either increased resilience, better emergency preparedness, or simply more favorable conditions compared to the rest of the country.

Neighboring Massachusetts reported the same rate of 0.42 incidents per million, though with only three incidents total.

By contrast, states like Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Nevada topped the list for most dangerous weather, facing frequent tornadoes, wildfires, and extreme heat waves. Nebraska alone recorded a staggering 58.34 weather-related injuries or deaths per million residents in 2024.

Why This Matters

In a time of growing concern about climate unpredictability, New Jersey’s low numbers are worth celebrating — and studying. From better emergency systems to improved infrastructure and climate planning, it’s a reminder that preparation and location both matter.

For residents of New Jersey, this data is a welcome reassurance: while the world faces more extreme weather events, the Garden State is, at least for now, a relatively safe haven.
